Status Update from Peace Corps Ukraine

Tuesday February 22, 2022

Read on for the latest direct updates we’ve been able to get from Peace Corps Ukraine:

The RPCV Alliance for Ukraine was in the process of planning a Virtual Town Hall with Peace Corps Ukraine staff when it was decided that, due to the threat of a Russian attack, US staff would be evacuated and Ukraine-based staff would transition to telework. Communications were interrupted for several days while equipment was moved and Peace Corps Ukraine staff email addresses were temporarily non-operational. We have worked to obtain updates on the status of Peace Corps Ukraine operations and staff and will continue publishing them as we receive them. Please note that the situation in Ukraine is changing rapidly.

Communication from Peace Corps Ukraine Country Desk – Wednesday, February 16th:

Many RPCVs have been reaching out to express support during this difficult time, please know how greatly it is appreciated for staff to hear from you all and feel that support from all parts of the world.

At this time, in accordance with State Department orders, Peace Corps American staff have been evacuated from Ukraine and will continue to remotely support Post operations, ongoing programs, and host country staff until conditions permit a safe return. Staff at Post and headquarters are monitoring current events and in close contact with the local U.S. Embassy to stay abreast of all news and any evolving situations that could require special attention. Email access for Post staff should be fully operational by the end of this week.

Communication from Acting Director Amy McGoldrick – Friday, February 18th:

Thank you for your ongoing efforts on behalf of PC Ukraine and Ukraine! Your care and concern have been an enormous source of comfort during this time.

First and foremost, all staff are safe and are continuing to telework remotely. I’m currently teleworking from the US, as are the rest of our PC Ukraine USDH leadership team.

We know many of you have reached out to staff members individually, and your expressions of solidarity, support and care have already been a great source of comfort to the team.

Thank you again for all that you are doing!

What can Alliance members do to show support and stay updated?

    • Per Acting Director McGoldrick’s recommendation, we have postponed planning for the Virtual Town Hall. However, Peace Corps Ukraine’s social media channels are currently active. If you are on social media, please follow and support them! We also encourage those of you who are connected directly with staff via personal social media accounts or other means to continue sharing your love and support.
    • What kind of updates do you want to hear from and about Peace Corps Ukraine? Let us know and we will do our best to provide the latest information.
    • If you are participating in or aware of any activities showing solidarity with or otherwise supporting Ukraine, tell us so that we can spread the word. You can tag the Alliance in your Ukraine-related social media posts, let us know about events that we should be publicizing, and reach out to us directly if you have ideas for projects we should support.
