Michele Vazquez (RPCV 2011-2013) and her counterpart, Anya, wrote and received a Peremoha Mini-Grant for Our Creative School (Творча Баранівка) in Baranivka. With the mini-grant, they were able to expand its programming, resources, and community engagement. What began as a small initiative has now developed into a structured weekly program, offering educational and creative opportunities for local youth and families.
A portion of the funding—$150—was allocated to the purchase of eight youth-focused books and a board game centered on ecology and environmental protection. These materials are now a part of the school’s growing library and are actively used during educational sessions to promote environmental awareness and creative thinking among young learners.

An additional $550 purchased two sewing machines and essential supplies, including thread, needles, scissors, rulers, and a pressing iron. These resources enabled the launch of sewing classes, taught by a newly associated local instructor with experience in garment-making. The school aims to support learners in creating a unique collection of clothing using upcycled materials, encouraging both creativity and sustainable practices.
To enhance the learning environment, they purchased a projector. It is now being used for educational presentations, community workshops, and multimedia learning sessions.
In addition, they purchased an electric kettle, which has contributed to the comfort and functionality of the shared space by providing warm refreshments during programs and gatherings.

Progress on Sustainability Initiatives
While the composting station is still under development, $100 has been reserved for its completion in the spring. Preliminary site preparation has been completed, laying the foundation for future educational programming related to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
Community Engagement and Growth
Our Creative School has officially become a regular weekly event, held each Sunday. The team has recently welcomed two local women as instructors, further strengthening community ties and expanding the range of educational offerings. One instructor—a skilled seamstress—will lead ongoing sewing classes open to children and interested community members.
The initiative also recently hosted a community fair to highlight the program and display the creative work of its young participants. The event was well attended and helped to attract new families to the program, further demonstrating the school’s growing impact and reach.
The Peremoha Mini-Grants program, launched in 2022, empowers Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) and their Ukrainian partners to lead impactful projects supporting humanitarian aid, community development, education, and youth initiatives. These grants are made possible through charitable contributions and proceeds from the Babusya’s Kitchen Cookbook.
You can help make a difference! Donate to the Peremoha fund, purchase a cookbook, or apply for your own grant to support Ukraine.
